Royal Tunbridge Wells

Royal Tunbridge Wells lies in the heart of the beautiful High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This historic spa town has welcomed visitors for over 400 years. Hever Castle & Gardens

Experience 700 years of history at the romantic double-moated 13th century castle once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII. Hever Castle & Gardens is the perfect setting for a day out whether alone, with friends or family. For history lovers this castle in Kent is a great place to learn not just about the Tudors, but also about the Astor family, who were the owners of Hever Castle for 80 years from 1903 and were responsible for most of what you see today. Spend hours admiring not only the lovely interiors and historic elements but also the stunning grounds with statues and a variety of ornamental gardens, making it an ideal day out for horticultural lovers.

 

Sissinghurst Castle & Gardens

Sissinghurst Castle spent some time in the 1700’s as a prison and later becoming home to the women’s land army. It was home to many fascinating families and people. There is an amazing view from the top of the tower including the working farm and 450-acre wider estate. The garden at Sissinghurst Castle is owned and maintained by the National Trust. It is among the most famous gardens in England and is grade I listed.

 

Leeds Castle

Rising majestically from the still waters of its moat, surrounded by 500 acres of parkland and gardens, Leeds Castle is without a doubt one of the most beautiful venues in Kent. Coined ‘The Loveliest Castle in the World’, it is the perfect place for a great day out.

 

Great Dixter House & Garden

Great Dixter is made up of three houses, one built originally in the mid-15th century with slightly later additions, the second a yeoman’s house from Benenden, across the border in Kent, built in the early 16th century and moved there in 1910, and the third combines the two with additional accommodation, completed in 1912.

Day 1

We depart Cumbria for the journey south to Kent, comfort stops will be made en-route before we arrive at our hotel the Bridgewood Manor Hotel near Chatham. After checking into our rooms, dinner is served in the hotel tonight.

Day 2

This morning we head south to the delightful Spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, with its elegant streets and Georgian buildings and the famous Pantiles, a colonnaded shopping area in the town centre. After lunch we head to enchanting Hever Castle & Gardens, this wonderful manor house was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. We return to the Bridgewood Manor for dinner.

Day 3

Today our first stop is Sissinghurst Castle & Gardens, renowned the world over, Its abundant planting and unique design make it a place that people have flocked to for almost 50 years. We then travel the short distance to Tenterden, this charming town has every reason to declare itself 'The Jewel of the Weald'. Its fine High Street must rank amongst the most attractive in the Country with historic houses, shops, restaurants and pubs separated from the carriageway by wide expanses of tree-lined grass verges. Following lunch we have an included journey on the Kent & East Sussex railway, travelling through the unspoilt countryside of the Rother Valley. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 4

This morning we visit the City of Rochester with its magnificent Cathedral and historic castle.Take a stroll along High Street and explore the old town and cobbled streets. In the afternoon we visit Leeds Castle, said to be ‘The most beautiful castle in the world’. Set in 500 acres of parkland, woodland walks and formal gardens, our visit takes us on a journey through the castle’s 1,000 years history. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 5

Our excursion today takes us to Rye this morning, stroll around this unique, compact, town overlooking the Rivers Rother and Brede. In the afternoon we visit Great Dixter House and Garden, the family home of the late Christopher Lloyd, plantsman and gardening writer. This exciting garden has plenty of interest from yew topiary, carpets of meadow flowers, dazzling colourful mixed borders natural ponds, a formal pool, and the wonderful Exotic Garden. Final dinner at the hotel tonight.

Day 6

We leave our hosts at the Bridgewood Manor Hotel for the journey north to Cumbria, arriving home early evening.
