A 5 day visit to the 'Heart of England' taking in Warwick, Stratford-on-Avon & historic Coughton Court

Stratford-upon-Avon.

A town synonymous with William Shakespeare. Stratford-upon-Avon introduces you to a market town with more than 800 years of history containing not only many buildings that survive to-day and would have been familiar to Shakespeare, but also a thriving community offering a wide variety of leisure and shopping experiences. The Countess of Evesham is a popular, well established family run 70ft restaurant cruiser and afternoon tea is served on board as we enjoy the peace, tranquility and enchanting views as the boat cruises some of the most delightful stretches of the gently flowing River Avon.

Warwick

The historic town of Warwick, with its magnificent Castle, secret gardens, antique shops and great choice of restaurants, is a magical place for a short break.

Warwick Castle, Britain's Ultimate Castle, lies at the heart of Warwick. Visit the lavishly decorated State Rooms, scale the towers and ramparts and descend into the dark dungeon. Be chilled in the ghost tower, meet colourful characters and enjoy year round entertainment from Easter and Christmas festivities to jousting tournaments and birds of prey displays. With a Victorian Rose Garden, Mill, Engine House and 60 acres of grounds to explore, there is plenty to enjoy.

One of the most delightful discoveries in Warwick is the Lord Leycester Hospital. This beautiful collection of 14th century timber-framed buildings, home to ex-servicemen known as The Brethren, house a chapel, Great Hall, galleried courtyard and Regimental Museum of the Queen's Own Hussars. Hidden at the back of the Hospital discover one of the oldest gardens in Warwick, the Master's Garden, a tranquil oasis in the midst of the town.

The Master's Garden is one of several historic gardens in and around Warwick. Other gems include the Mill Garden at the bottom of Mill Street. Relax in this secluded garden and enjoy some of the finest views of Warwick Castle and the river. Hill Close Gardens were once a retreat for Victorian townsfolk. Talk to the gardeners who tend the plots and find out how local people saved Hill Close Gardens from destruction. Wander along the old paths, discover unusual varieties of fruit and vegetables from Victorian times, rest inside little brick summerhouses, and listen to birdsong.

Henley in Arden

Idyllic Henley in Arden is one of the oldest market towns in Shakespeare’s England. The name of this town refers to the Forest of Arden, which is just next to the town. With its avenue of elegant Cotswold stone houses, a few Tudor relics, eclectic shops and affluent residents, Henley in Arden has an un-spoilt historic high street. It is host to a wonderful collection of shops, restaurants and pubs. Henley was a market town of some importance in the Middle Ages. In the centre of the town is the old Market Place, where stands the remains of the 15th century Market Cross, one of the few still existing in Warwickshire. Proclamations have been made from the Cross for more than five centuries, including the proclamation of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. The one mile long High Street is a conservation area and contains over 150 buildings of Historic Interest.

Coughton Court

Coughton Court (pronounced "coat un") is a Grade 1 listed English Tudor country house and has been owned by the Throckmorton family since 1409. Coughton Court stands in 25 acres of grounds containing some of the most beautiful gardens in the country.

Coughton Court still has many of its original features including its flamboyant sixteenth-century gate tower. It is one of the last remaining Roman Catholic houses in the country to retain its historic treasures, housing one of the very best collections of portraits and memorabilia of one family from the early Tudor times. Alongside family items on display, there are pieces such as the chemise reputedly worn by Mary Queen of Scots when she was executed and a bishop's Cope, with intricate needlework, believed to have been worked upon by Catherine of Aragon.
