The celebrated Betty's tea room was established in Harrogate in 1919, with queues still forming for their glorious afternoon teas. Enjoy some time perusing Harrogate's many fascinating shops in the Montpellier Quarter for antique treasures, high-end fashion, charming arts & crafts shops and bustling markets.

'Glow’ Winter Illuminations at RHS Garden Harlow Carr

See Harlow Carr in a different light this winter as special lighting effects bring a touch of magic to the most northerly RHS garden in Harrogate. Enjoy an illuminated trail around the magnificent trees and shrubs as dusk falls. See the lake, Winter Walk, Streamside and Doric columns as you’ve never seen them before. Visitors can bask in the ‘glow’ of the winter illuminations three evenings a week (Thursday – Saturday) from 3pm – 8pm.


York St Nicholas Fayre

St Nicholas Fayre is one of the most popular Christmas markets in the UK, with thousands of visitors coming to York over the four-day event.

The Fayre offers a range of markets specialising in gifts, crafts, and the very best in local farm produce. Outside markets move into Parliament Street, St Sampsons Square and Coppergate while York's grand medieval Guild Hall provides a home for 'Made In Yorkshire' artists and crafters from across the region. The magnificent medieval townhouse, Barley Hall, presents a special medieval market with live crafting, mulled wine and costumed traders and St William's College houses an arts and crafts market for fine hand-made items not to be found in the shops. Carol singers and buskers flock to the city to perform over the weekend to thousands of festive shoppers.

Friday 13th Dec

A morning departure from Cumbria as we head to Richmond, time for coffee in this lovely town that is a northern gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, from here we continue to Ripon, explore the market square and wonderful cathedral. We complete our journey to Harrogate and the Cairn Hotel. Dinner in the hotel followed by live entertainment.


Saturday 14th Dec

A morning to explore Harrogate with its broad tree-lined streets, antique shops and shopping arcades, elegant buildings and the world famous Betty’s tearooms. In the afternoon, we travel to RHS Harlow Carr where we get to experience the ‘Glow’ Winter Illuminations. Here you will see Harlow Carr in a different light this winter, enjoy the atmosphere of the festive season, in a beautiful garden setting. See captivating light installations and marvel at magnificent trees lit up across the garden as special lighting effects bring a touch of magic to the illuminated trail. Dinner at the Cairn Hotel.

Sunday 15th Dec

After breakfast, we head to York and the St Nicholas Christmas Fayre. Soak up the city’s medieval charm this festive season as the streets are full of stalls selling Christmas gifts, locally made Yorkshire produce and crafts from across the region. Enjoy a mulled wine and watch the costumed traders, carol singers and street entertainers. We leave late afternoon for the return journey to Cumbria.
