Admire drifts of spring snowdrops on this weekend break

Chirk Castle

From the end of January, snowdrop season at Chirk Castle is our traditional way to dust off the old year and embrace the new. With a beautiful white carpet of snowdrops throughout the Pleasure Ground Wood, including some rare species, and also patches of snowdrops across the wider estate, there's plenty of space to wander and find the perfect viewpoint or photo.

The Pleasure Ground Wood is always a lovely place to view a stunning carpet of snowdrops, a sure sign that spring is on the way.

The fire will be lit in the Woodsman's Hut in Pleasure Ground Wood, near where the best snowdrop show appears, so there will be somewhere to get out of the cold, and on weekends we'll be selling warming cups of hot chocolate just outside so you can treat your eyes and your tastebuds.

Enjoy the early spring bulbs throughout the garden and visit the Adams Tower, shop and tea room. Please note that main castle rooms are open on weekends only for guided conservation tours.

Friday 2nd Mar

We leave Cumbria in the morning for the journey south to Chester, time at leisure for lunch, see the world famous Row Galleries, the most complete city walls in Britain, the Eastgate Clock and Chester cathedral. We check into our hotel, the Queen, late afternoon. A welcome glass of Bucks Fizz is served before dinner in the hotel.

Saturday 3rd Mar

We leave Chester after breakfast and head south past Wrexham to the Welsh border and the magnificent medieval fortress of Chirk Castle overlooking the Welsh Marches. With over 700 years of history, and as the last castle from this period still lived in today, Chirk Castle's many occupants have left behind lavish interiors and a beautiful and eclectic collection. The state rooms include a 17th-century Long Gallery, grand 18th-century saloon with rich tapestries, servants' hall, and the restored East Range, containing the library and 1920s style Bow Room showing off Chirk Castle’s connections to high society. Snowdrops are one of the many annual floral highlights of Chirk Castle’s award-wining garden. Bulbs can be found throughout the garden, scattered between clipped yews, herbaceous borders, shrub and rock gardens, the best displays are in the Pleasure Ground Wood, which is the woodland attached to the formal gardens. Dinner on our return to Chester.
