The city of Ripon is located on the River Ure. Ripon is a beautiful market town that was founded over 1300 years ago, and is famous as an old Cathedral City where monasteries have stood since the 7th Century. The old city of Ripon is filled with shops, cafes, restaurants, and pubs, and also boasts many historical buildings and museums, including Ripon Cathedral, the Wakeman’s House, Studley Royal, Fountains Abbey and Ripon Spa Gardens where a Victorian bandstand is set.


Chatsworth House Flower Show

Chatsworth is one of Britain's best loved historic houses and estates, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire it is set in the magnificent landscape of Derbyshire's Peak District National Park.The Duke & Duchess are delighted to be welcoming the RHS to Chatsworth for the first of many memorable flower shows. Bold and innovative this new show is set to be simply amazing. Following in the footsteps of Chatsworth’s design Revolutionaries ‘Capability’ Brown and Joseph Paxton, there will be gardens, displays and features from hotly-tipped designers. Gather gardening tips from talks and demonstrations by experts. Plus quiz RHS Advisors. Discover a range of Show Gardens where designers push boundaries to create daring and innovative designs. Exciting categories such as FreeForm will provide a blank canvas for designers to showcase their ground breaking ideas.

A striking reconstruction of Joseph Paxton’s magnificent Great Conservatory is the spectacular setting for amazing floral displays and plant sales. You can also explore mini plant worlds themed around habitats such as woodland, Mediterranean and jungle. 

The show brings together a selection of the finest independent companies and specialist nurseries, offering a wide-range of design-led products and quality plants.


Harlow Carr

One of Yorkshire’s most relaxing and innovative gardens at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, RHS Harlow Carr is a showcase of horticultural excellence all year round. Wander through the tranquil surroundings of this stunning 58 acre garden and gain ideas for your own borders, or simply relax with family and friends on a leisurely stroll. Pick up the latest tips and growing techniques in the beautiful Kitchen Garden, where raised beds, fruit trees and a forager’s garden have been laid out with thoughtful design and ornamental aspects to create a truly unique and inspirational growing space. Saunter along the lush Streamside Garden, unearth hidden treasures in the Woodland and take glorious deep breaths in the magical Scented Garden, with its focus on roses.

Day 1

A morning departure from Cumbria as we travel to Richmond, time for coffee in this delightful town prior to heading to Ripon where we have time at leisure for lunch and to explore the market square and wonderful Cathedral. We leave mid afternoon for the journey to Retford and our hotel, the Best Western West Retford. Dinner in the hotel.


Day 2

We have a full day visit to Chatsworth Estate for the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show. Its main theme is ‘Design Revolutionaries’ and will celebrate not only the creative genius of gardeners and garden designers from the past, especially Joseph Paxton who was once the estate’s gardener, but also the talent, ideas and conceptual thinking of today’s generation of designers. Fresh ideas, cutting edge design and new technology will be at the heart of the show. A representation of Joseph Paxton's magnificent Great Conservatory forms the central feature of the floral marquee and two wings either side will house a selection of the UK's top nurseries selling a wide range of plants. Discover mini plant worlds themed around popular topics such as Cutting and Dry Gardens, where you can pick up top tips from knowledgeable growers. We return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 3

A leisurely breakfast before we head north towards Harrogate and a visit to the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr. See dramatic herbaceous borders, wildflower meadows, a large kitchen garden, alpine house and stunning seasonal plant displays. We leave late afternoon for the journey home to Cumbria, arriving back early evening.

Best Western Plus West Retford Hotel

Best Western Plus West Retford Hotel is situated in the historic market town of Retford. It is an 18th-century manor house set in over 4 acres of professionally-landscaped gardens.

Bedrooms feature a 32-inch flat-screen Freeview TV, a stylish private bathroom as well as free tea and coffee making facilities and an iron and ironing board.

Please note there is no lift available to rooms on the first floor. Ground floor rooms are available, please ask when booking.

Guests can relax in the comforts of the hotel by enjoying a drink in the Chatsworth Bar before dining in the luxurious Orangery Restaurant, with a menu featuring traditional favourites and exciting new dishes using fresh local produce.

The hotel is situated just a short drive from both the A1 and M1.
